Corviale's silence

by Marco Danieli

The Corviale is a single one-kilometer-long social housing complex for 9.000 people, built during 1972-1982 in Rome. A big concrete structure has become the embodiment of a failed utopia from an urban planner's drawing board. 'Il Serpentone' was built to stimulate "community", but displays dynamics of isolation and closure. Wandering in that spaces means meeting the silence.
